Local Springfield
Izzy’s Resturant – Springfield
It had been a long time since I had been to Izzy’s for dinner, but kept seeing their advertising for their new grill items and decided it had been long enough. I don’t want to build up a lot of suspense so let me state it this way: If you want to get more than enough food for a fairly low price, Izzy’s is the right place for you. If however, you would like dinner that has exceptional flavor, Izzy’s may not be the place for you.
So, let me start with a comparison with what I remember from before and what I had today. First, the chicken before was my favorite and today it was similar but not as good. I think the reason it wasn’t as good was that the chicken was very small and so wasn’t as juicy as before. A smaller chicken will cook faster and dry out and I felt the fried chicken was dry…..kind of hard to do when it is deep fried.
The mashed potatoes may have been instant because they were very thin. I could be wrong, I didn’t see them being made, but they were very thin. The gravy was good. The pizzas were very small and crunchy, telling me they may have been overcooked. But, the reason I went in was to sample the orange salmon, steak and teriyaki chicken. Instead of the chicken, I tried their Hawaiian pork kabobs. I was dissatisfied with the kabobs and the salmon. The steak was ok, but nothing to drive across town for. I didn’t have salad, but Izzy’s has an exceptional salad bar.
Overall, the dinner was filling and due to the fact that I am old, it was pretty inexpensive. Still, I don’t think I will be going in again anytime soon. It just wasn’t good enough to bring me back. I will say service was good and the manager was concerned when I told him I didn’t like what they had done, but I don’t think they will change anytime soon.
This is just my first attempt at making a movie. I got a small digital camera and took some pictures of my dogs and my back yard. The yard looks terrible, afterall it is December. I then used Microsoft Movie Maker 2 to edit the short video. I hope it turns out alright, but it is a test. Thanks for taking a look.

I hope you enjoy this entry from the Springfield Christmas Parade. The parade route was down Mohawk Blvd to Main Street and lasted over an hour and half.
Everyone seemed to be having an excellent time. There is nothing like enjoying a small town parade for the Christmas Season. Every year the Springfield Board of Realtors participates with a float entry. This year’s entry had two signs (on Realtor stands, of course) that said, “The Market is Great” and Rates are Low.”

Fiesta Latina 2008
Viva La Fiesta!A celebration of Latin music, food, art and dance at Springfield’s Island Park Friday and Saturday (originally posted in mid-September 2008). Bienvenidos!

Latin Band
Bands played, dancers danced, food vendors fed patrons, car nuts saw the inside of low riders and found out how the heck they could jump up and down.

Jacked Up Low Rider
Take a look at what that takes:

Hydralic Pumps
Here is an interesting steering wheel:

The display of art was wonderful. My favorite is this one:

Of course, if you were hungry, you could try some bananas:

Bannanas
There was an excellent selection of food. Tried the enchiladas from Guatemala, the rellena from Peru and some wonderful tamales from Mexico. The green was spicy and better than the red. I was kind of surprised that the other food was actually kind of bland.
I thought the cost was a bit steep for what was being offered, but I might be wrong. It was $7 per person or $5 with the donation of 3 canned goods. Music was good, cars were interesting, art was wonderful but there wasn’t much else in the evening.

Here is a bit of a review for the Bright Oaks Meat Market in downtown Springfield from August. Drop by and find out what is good and what is great. This was originally published in my Active Rain Blog.
Bright Oaks Meats
Bright Oak Meats, on the corner of 7th and Main Street in downtown Springfield Oregon is a real find. I didn’t know about it until word of mouth reached my ear, and I had driven by it many times. See, I am not just about flowers and vegetables. I like meat too.
Buffalo, Jerky, Rabbit
Local meat and different meat than you find in Safeway or Albertsons is what is available at Bright Oak Meats. But, what brought me in the door was the jerky. I love jerky and they make their own. Also, they have several different flavors of jerky.
Weighing the Purchase
Great price on the scales, but that is for pepperoni, not jerky. Fast, friendly, helpful service. My favorite flavor of jerkey is the sweet and spicy. Although, I tried the buffalo last time and it was very flavorful, if a bit on the dry side. Now, that is funny, jerky on the dry side.
They also serve up steaks, roasts, hamburger and the like. I tried their New York strip and it was outstanding. I also had a boneless rib eye and it was also good, but surprising, the strip was better.
So, my recommendation for meat is to try Bright Oak Meats on 7th and Main Street in downtown Springfield. Let me know what you think.

Springfield Farmer’s Market
This Post was from July 25, 2008

Mural at Springfield Farmer's Market
The above mural is what you see when you pull up to the Springfield Farmers’ market. The market is open every Friday (during the growing season) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market is located between 5th & 6th Streets on Main Street in downtown Springfield. It is being held in the Springfield Museum parking lot.

Fruits and Veggies
When I was there today, there weren’t very many vendors, but the ones there seemed to have a lot of great produce that was grown locally. I purchased some yellow grape tomatoes and lemon cucumbers. I guess it was my day to go yellow.
Personally, I can’t wait until sweet corn and ripe red tomatoes are on the list of available produce. There were red tomatoes available, but weren’t ripe, so I passed. For me, there is nothing better than Willamette Valley sweet corn on the cob. Of course, it should be dripping in butter, that makes it soooo good for you. LOL

Lucious Strawberries
Since we had a fairly late spring, I saw something I didn’t expect, and that was these outstanding strawberries. Just so you know, our strawberries are the best for flavor. These are really colorful, but I didn’t try them for flavor.

Flowers at the Market
There were also colorful flowers on display for sale. If you were hungry, there are also refreshments available. So, try the Springfield Farmers’ Market. See you there!
