Why I love being a mortgage banker

I started in the finance industry in a finance company that soon became TransAmerica Finance and progressed to manager with the company. I then started an independent finance company in LaGrande Oregon that was owned by a savings and loan in the 80s. Those that remember the 80s know that almost all of the savings and loans were taken over a lot like the banks are being taken over today. This, in a round about way, is how I came back to the Willamette Valley and into the mortgage business in Eugene/Springfield.

I enjoyed working with people and solving problems for them in the finance company but had a real problem with the way the major companies had a corporate philosophy of keeping people in debt from cradle to grave. What I do now, is try to help people get out of the debt that is bringing them down and work out a program to get them solvent with payments they can handle and make sense. That is one of the reasons I always want to make sure that the payment someone has is not more than they can actually handle. Just because someone can qualify for a $2,000 a month payment, doesn’t mean they should actually take a loan that will give them that much of a payment.

As a finance company employee, I spent 5% of my time giving people money and 95% of my time trying to get it back again. So, basically, my job was only enjoyable 5% of the time. Now, I am not responsible for the collections, so I can spend 100% of my time helping people into loans that are not going to be a problem for the person that has to spend 100% of their time trying to collect them. A good loan officer can stop a lot of the collection problems down the road by helping their clients see what is actually good for them. I like to think I am a good loan officer.

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping someone with their first home. If it is an FHA 203k Streamline rehab loan, WOW! what satisfaction. If it is a VA loan for a returning Iraqi veteran, how proud that makes me feel. If it is a no money down USDA loan for a deserving family, I couldn’t be prouder.
